Readiness for therapy

It is excellent that you are considering therapy at this time, it is a beautiful gift to give yourself this time and space for reflection and growth. Often people may start therapy because of a trigger, for example a change in personal circumstances, stress or a calling to personal growth. Many people may decide to start therapy in January or September as they mark a new beginning or when they have more time as children return to school. Whatever your reason…welcome.

Consider your where you are in the cycle of change (Prochaska & DiClemente, 1994). There are five stages: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action and maintenance.  In pre-contemplation we have not yet considered change and feel that the costs of our current way of doing things do not outweigh the benefits.   As we contemplate. we see the possible benefits of change, but we still aren’t sure. In preparation, we are more determined to change.  Have a think about where you think you are in the cycle of change and wanting to work on yourself in therapy. You are off to a good start by reading this resource.

Wherever you are in the cycle notice that, and you can build on this in an active reflective way. Let’s get ready for therapy; book and appointment and remind yourself what you want to get out of this process. Visualise yourself three months from now, what do you want to be different? Why do you want to make a change now? Are you ready to make some time for you? I look forward to hearing from you and beginning this journey with you.
